ABSTRACT

The Megakaryocyte Platelets originate from megakaryocytes, the largest cells resident within the bone marrow. Although platelets constitute about 5% of circulating blood cells, megakaryocytes are relatively infrequent, making up only 0.05% of nucleated marrow cells (3). However, each of the 40 million megakaryocytes can make 2000 to 3000 platelets (4). As the average human has about one trillion circulating platelets, and another one-half trillion platelets exchangeably sequestered within the spleen, the normal 10-day platelet survival indicates that about 150 billion platelets are manufactured daily. Normal platelet survival is approximately 10 days.
