Before mass emigration and global travel were the norm, it was common for members of the caring professions to share the same background and belief systems as their patients. Today, however, most countries contain populations from numerous ethnicities, cultures, and religions, with varying legal experiences and degrees of trust of the medical professions (Table 1).
