ABSTRACT

VMware ESX is undoubtedly the most widely deployed and most stable server virtualization platform on the market today. The platform was built and architected to be a production ready, enterprise-class server virtualization product that is feature rich and designed to have the smallest possible overhead thanks to its hypervisor design. In this chapter, we will take a look at the platform’s background and then cover some of the specific features found in VMware ESX and the VMware Infrastructure 3 suite. And finally, we’ll take a look at what VMware is doing with their hardware embedded version of the hypervisor, VMware ESXi.
