Virtual Machine Concepts Virtual machines (VMs), also called guests, are virtual systems residing in a VMware ESX environment that operates on a single piece of hardware that leverages virtualization in order to operate more than a single operating system at a time. VMware accomplishes this process through the use of a hypervisor technology.
