ABSTRACT
In the balance of this book we will look systematically at the many issues associated with the steps of the statistical modelling process, using an approach based on what will be termed
quantile methods
. However, there is the danger that, if we do just go through these methods step by step, the reader will not see the wood for the trees. The aim of this chapter is thus to provide an outline of the wood. This will be done by bringing together the simplest of the ideas and approaches of quantile modelling to form both an initial picture and a basis for later development.
