ABSTRACT
The notebook is a ubiquitous feature in the laboratory setting. While no one can dispute the necessity of documenting experimental work, the effort required to prepare, evidence, and store laboratory data is a frequent lament of the overtaxed researcher and a considerable expense to the organization as a whole. This chapter seeks to highlight the requirements of effective experimental documentation as it relates to the patent process and to provide a logical rationale for documentation procedures.
