Note that the subcontractor and the laboratory placing the subcontract could be two different laboratories within the same organisation, i.e. the arrangement could be purely internal.

The R&D projects can be considered as a collection of discrete tasks or workpackages, each consisting of a number of unit processes, themselves composed of modules containing routine unit operations. The unit processes are characterized as being separated by natural dividing lines at which work can be interrupted and the test portion or extract can be stored without detriment before the next step. This is illustrated in Figure 2.
