ABSTRACT

Rhinosinusitis is a very common disease in children (1). The average toddler

raised in the home environment has six to eight upper respiratory infections

(URIs) each year while the child in daycare may have up to 20-22 URIs each

year. Sinusitis may be the result in 0.5% of these infectious processes (2). In

older children, 3-4% of all otherwise healthy children will develop sinusitis

each year. The majority of these episodes resolve without intervention or only

require one course of antibiotics. Some children develop recurrent or chronic

rhinosinusitis that responds poorly or transiently to intensive medical manage-

ment. Functional endoscopic sinus (FES) surgery may be considered when

extensive medical management has failed (3).
