The atmosphere abounds in all types of aerosol particles, including combustion particles (e.g.,
soot), mineral dust, sea salt, organic particles, and aqueous inorganic acids [1, 2]. It would be
difficult to overstate the significance of atmospheric aerosol particles. They are the source of
heterogeneous processing in the atmosphere. Aerosols influence the planet’s radiative bal-
ance, and as such they play an important role in the global climate. Air visibility is determined
by aerosol loading. Finally, the inhalation of aerosol particles almost certainly impacts
human health.
