ABSTRACT

A wide variety of neoplasms in the eyelid arise from different cell types. Many of these cells are present in other tissues of the eye and its adnexa. These tumors are covered elsewhere in chapters devoted specifically to tumors of melanocytes (Chapter 59), blood vessels (Chapter 62), nerves (Chapter 63), soft tissues (Chapter 64), and lymphoid tissue (Chapter 66). This chapter focuses on the epithelial tumors, particularly from the standpoint of their pathobiology. Excellent detailed histological descriptions of the neoplasms described in this chapter are found in the published books of ophthalmic and surgical pathology (73,100). The classification of tumors outlined here is adapted from the World Heath Organization (WHO) histological classification of tumors. The staging of cancer at specific anatomical sites is as outlined by the American Joint Committee on Cancer (6).
