ABSTRACT

The first challenge when looking at reporting options is to differentiate the following types of reports:

Automated status reports Performance/capacity/trending reports Diagnosis reports Frivolous reports

The last point is somewhat controversial. People in one department may consider a particular report to be frivolous while others in another department consider it to be critical. For instance, reports requiring a complete list of all files backed up in the most-recent backup could be considered frivolous. However, although this report provides questionable value as a daily report in an enterprise environment, it may actually be very important when diagnosing backup issues, backtracking changes to a system, or responding to auditors.
