ABSTRACT

When considering what to back up, always remember the rule that it is better to back up a little more than not enough. This doesn’t mean to go overboard and deliberately back up items that are known not to be required (e.g., useless filesystem backups of open database files that require special backups instead) — such actions invariably artificially inflate the backup window and cause headaches. What the rule does mean is that companies should not be miserly with their backup media — if it’s a 50/50 choice between whether something should or shouldn’t be backed up, and there is no real pressing argument either way, the choice should be to perform the backup.
