ABSTRACT

With the ever-accelerating media coverage of “new” inventions and achievements in the field, the real motivation for the development of fuel-cell-powered cars — cleaner car emissions — is almost forgotten. Expectations range from fuel-cell-powered cars waiting in the car dealers’ showrooms next year to complete independence from oil imports with hydrogen-or methanol-powered fuel cell cars

. The question “why fuel cells?” was already asked in Chapter 1, and it is the purpose of the following

to give an overview of what has been achieved in this market segment and who the main developers are. No doubt, fuel cells are experiencing heavy competition from improved internal combustion engines and from other concepts. A thorough discussion of these competing approaches will be presented in Chapters 11 and 12.
