ABSTRACT

One is investigation into high-density recording [Kishima et al., 2001] using near-field optics and shortwavelength radiation sources. The other investigation is into optical integration technology [Suhara, 1996; Ukita et al., 1991] to provide the disk system with high performance and allow it to be massproduced. In this chapter we focus on the latter technology, focusing particularly on optical pick-up devices and optical head devices for recordable disk systems. We will show that the integrated optical pick-up and head devices are good examples of opto-mechatronic devices.
