ABSTRACT

In 1993 Drs. Ladell Crawford, Katrina Cornish and Glenn Fuller initiated the Agricultural Sciences Academic Workshop at the Western Regional Research Center. The purpose of the workshop is to introduce third-year high school students to a broad variety of scientific experience, both as a community outreach effort and in the hope of encouraging some to become interested in scientific careers. The two local schools from which students are recruited include one with a high percentage of minority students traditionally underrepresented in the sciences. The material included in this chapter is presented as one 90-minute session of the approximately 15 sessions that the students attend. Additional information on this workshop can be found at <https://www.ars.usda.gov/is/pr/2005/050209.o.albany.htm>;.
