17.1 Introduction Within the wireless communications research and industry community over the last decade, the concept of software defined radios (SDRs) and cognitive radios have come to be considered the leading solutions to the problems of spectrum communication for the next century. SDRs incorporate the latest in hardware affordability, computational power, and signal analysis techniques into a device that provides nearly unlimited flexibility and portability. In addition, SDRs provide a unique solution to the growing spectrum usage challenge facing the wireless communications industry. Unfortunately, not many devices have been developed and made available for the mainstream that can yet fully meet all the demands and expectations the technology is reported to fulfill (Barker, 2007).
