ABSTRACT

The challenging nature of the wireless channel poses problems for wireless networks, in that devices within the network must ensure reliable communication in the presence of effects such as fading. To mitigate these challenges, a useful technique is to make use of spatial diversity, which exploits the large number of antennas available in the network. Because the antennas are likely to be far enough apart to experience independent fading environments, at least one of the antennas is likely has a good link to the data sink. Because these methods of obtaining diversity require nodes throughout a wireless network to work together, systems that use them are said to attain cooperative diversity.
