ABSTRACT

Foundation refers to skin tone color cosmetics intended to be applied to the face, and usually the neck, to enhance the wearer’s appearance. A successful product evens out skin tones, obscures imperfections, and augments skin color without appearing artificial. Types of foundation formulations include pressed and loose powders, anhydrous wax/oil or wax/volatile solvent systems, and emulsions. In the U.S., emulsified foundations, first introduced in the mid-1950s, continue to be the most popular form, especially the fluid formulations, referred to as liquid makeup.
