Photosensitivity can be reduced or eliminated in patients with certain photodermatoses by deliberate exposure to PUVA therapy, UVB phototherapy, or other wavebands of radiation (Table 1). This therapy is called desensitization and is the treatment of choice in many severely incapacitated patients. The management of some conditions, such as PMLE, is easy and routine so that it can be safely performed in any office. In contrast, management of solar urticaria and chronic photosensitive eczemas is not easy since it requires phototesting and close monitoring of patients.
