The need for a rapid and reliable diagnosis of myocardial infarction (MI) is crucial. Initially, these efforts focused on clinical assessment and ECG, but, over time, it became clear that they are often non-diagnostic. Therefore, modern day clinicians rely heavily on cardiac biomarkers. Guidelines now call for the routine assessment of cardiac biomarkers for the diagnosis of MI (Table 1).
