Over half the cattle in the world are found in the tropics (from the Tropic of Cancer [23.5°N latitude] to the Tropic of Capricorn [23.5°S latitude]). The semitropics (or subtropics, from 23.5° to 30°N and 23.5° to 30°S latitudes) of the United States include the Gulf Coast region of the southern states and all of Florida. Nearly 30% of the U.S. beef herd is maintained in this zone. Climate-mandated dependence on warm-season grasses and lack of significant grain production limits beef cattle producers in this region largely to the cow-calf segment of the industry.
