History of active packaging
Active packaging has been developing as a field of scientific and technological interest without a unique historical driver. There have been several
independent drivers acting on different timescales (even different centuries), in several countries concurrently and involving a variety of food types, target problems, and many scientific disciplines. The term
was introduced as recently as two decades ago,
even though the tinplate can has been in use as an example of active packaging for more than a century. Some of the driving forces have been directed toward enhancing a limiting characteristic of the packaging material, while others have brought a novel function to the packaging to allow protection or preservation of the food.
