ABSTRACT

Can attraction to water grow with stream order? Headwaters springs and babbling brooks have their special charms, but where all those delicate tributaries are gathered into a river, I am at home. Usually, the most impressive rivers find their way through cities. The cities, of course, found the rivers. In most urban settings, rivers have been straightened and controlled to prevent flooding and make more land available for human use. Precisely where water should be reaching its fullest expression, it is rendered powerless, or worse, invisible. Where I live, most of the oxbow-sketched floodplain and estuarine marshes are gone and even the rip-rapped waterway that remains is obscured by industry and highways. I will share three stories of community-based efforts to reconnect functionally
