In 1998, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a report, Preventing Emerging Infectious Diseases, which outlined a plan designed to address key emerging infectious disease issues [1]. Antimicrobial resistance was seen as one of the major infectious disease issues facing the world as we entered the new millennium. In 2003, an Institute of Medicine report entitled Microbial Threats to Health reiterated this issue [2]. In this chapter, we review some of the approaches that have been taken to combat antimicrobial resistance in outpatient and inpatient settings.
