ABSTRACT

Augmented reality (AR) is a technology emerging in computer aided design (CAD), industrial service, and maintenance applications. In contrast to virtual reality, where the user interactively explores an entirely artificial environment, AR aims to supplement the real world. For example, computer-generated information is blended in the field of view of a technician, so that it appears overlaid to the real scene and demonstrates step-by-step complex reparation tasks. Besides CAD-driven industrial planning and maintenance applications, AR technology is increasingly used as a powerful user interface in geospatial applications such as navigation systems, tourist information Services, disaster management systems, or in presentation of cultural heritage sites, and more. The development of a tourist information system for mobile clients that makes use of 3D maps was the main objective of the project TellMaris. The system is targeted to boat tourists on the Baltic Sea. For this group, relevant information as well as Location-based Services are integrated.
