ABSTRACT

In this book we consider solid bodies initially in a reference stress-free, strain-free ostate of mechanical and thermal equilibrium at a uniform temperature T . In this state† ††

the bodies are not subjected to external loads and heat does not flow in or out of them. Subsequently the bodies are subjected to specified external loads described in Section 2.2, as a result of which they deform and reach a second state of mechanical, but not necessarily thermal, equilibrium.
