As stated in Chapter 1, driver distraction is the diversion of attention away from activities critical for safe driving toward a competing activity. There is converging evidence, as noted in other chapters, that distraction is a signifi cant contributing factor in vehicle crashes. However, the degree to which distraction is problematic for older drivers is less known. In this chapter, we address this issue within the context of the known crash risk and driving patterns of older drivers. Consideration is also given to the effects of aging on functional abilities and other factors that might predispose older drivers to the effects of distraction and their propensity to engage in distracting activities. In addition, we consider strategies for reducing the potentially negative effects of distraction on older driver performance and safety.
