ABSTRACT
In this chapter we briefly introduce the mathematical tools that are essential to comprehend and apply the techniques described in later chapters. In particular, we focus on two aspects: differential equations, which describe the dynamics of a system (Sections 1.2-1.3), and optimization algorithms that can be used to obtain the parameters to such equations (Sections 1.4-1.5).
