ABSTRACT

A major advantage of recording from neuron ensembles in the hippocampus, or any brain area, is the potential for deciphering some of its well-described behavioral and cognitive correlates. The ultimate goal of ensemble recording and analysis is to determine how activity within the ensemble relates to behavioral and/or cognitive events, i.e., “What does the ensemble

encode

?” In the hippocampus, for example, the anatomy has been studied extensively such that connections between the principal

cell groups are well characterized and the local “functional” circuitry is currently under intense investigation.
