ABSTRACT

The autonomic nervous system consists of central connections, visceral afferent fibers, and visceral efferent fibers. The hypothalamus is where the principal integration of the entire autonomic nervous

system takes place and it is involved in the regulation of blood pressure, body temperature, water balance, metabolism of carbohydrates and lipids, sleep, emotion, and sexual reflexes. To a lesser extent, the medulla oblongata, limbic system, and cerebral cortex also integrate, coordinate, and adjust the functions of the autonomic nervous system.
