ABSTRACT

The question of ‘‘How clean is clean?’’ has been around for years, but it cannot be answered

by any one engineer or any one set of conditions. After a thorough review of the available

literature, specifications, and practices of various industrial gas companies as well as users,

the following recommendation is offered to the project engineer: ‘‘Choose the correct cleaning

procedure to fit the existing conditions, and specify in detail the necessary steps to be used by

the contractor doing the work.’’ This chapter, however, should be used only for information

or guidance. It should not be confused with, or take the place of any federal, state, or

municipal specifications, or insurance requirements or national safety codes. Abnormal or

unusual circumstances may require different or additional procedures.
