ABSTRACT

Hypoglycemia: Failure to maintain serum glucose >60 mg/dL. Euglycemia: Serum glucose level of 70-110 mg/dL. Therapeutic euglycemia maintenance: 100-250 mg/dL.

Accidental insulin overdose: Most common cause of hypoglycemia due to combinations of insulin dose miscalculations, reduced caloric intake, increased exercise level or intercurrent infections or other illnesses. Long-acting (LA) sulfonylureas: Most common cause of non-insulin, drug-induced hypoglycemia, especially chlorpropamide LA and glyburide LA. Market withdrawals: (1) The biguanide, phenformin, was withdrawn in 1976, due to fatal lactic acidosis; (2) troglitazone (Rezulin®), a thiazolidinedione, was withdrawn in the 1990s, due to fatal hepatotoxicity.
