Introduction

This chapter begins with a brief description of the state of fire safety engineering design and explains the context in which this textbook was written. It discusses the core curriculum of fire safety engineering and places the material presented in the book into context with other topics within the fire safety engineering discipline. Enclosure fire models currently used in fire safety engineering design are briefly discussed. Finally, an overview of the contents of the book is presented and general notations are explained.
