ABSTRACT

This chapter relates trends in electronics and information technology (E&IT) to the future course of access to medical instrumentation. We are looking for ways to bring medical instrumentation to a point where user-adaptable, assured-usable user interfaces are de rigueur. We conclude that the Web experience has contributions to make to medical instrumentation, but falls short in some areas. Even combining Web technology (for reaching the user) with medical informatics standardization (of the terms of the business logic of the device), we are left with some gaps. Some approaches that may be advantageous in filling those gaps are suggested.
