ABSTRACT

Functional electrical (neuromuscular) stimulation, denoted as FES (or FNS) has its origins in Luigi Galvani’s experiment on electrically exciting a frog’s leg in the 1780s as described by him in “De Viribus Electricitatis in Motu Muscular”(1791), which despite some faults due to the state of scientific knowledge at its time, can be shown to lay the foundation to two great disciplines, electrical engineering and neurophysiology [l].
