ABSTRACT

The downtime of a manufacturing system is not only caused by manufacturingsystem component failures, but also by nonconforming product produced by a degraded system. Therefore, system reliability analysis for a manufacturing system should take into account not only its tooling and machine uptime, but also the product quality. To develop an integrated system model by integrating product quality, manufacturing-system component degradation, and process design information together for manufacturing-system design evaluation and optimization, some terminologies are defined in this chapter:

Manufacturing system

— a system consisting of tools and equipment to perform the designed operations in a multistage manufacturing process (MMP) with products as its end item.
