In this chapter we address the fundamental question, “What is good and bad forestry?” We approach this topic by examining various impacts of management practices on different forest ecosystems. It is intuitive that not all management practices will produce the same effects in a given forest and that particular treatments will vary in their impacts across a variety of forest types. An understanding of these consequences lends itself to the selection of the most appropriate indicators of sustainable forest management. Presently, small land owners face the problem of having too many indicators to monitor management impacts on ecosystems. With the informed selection of a few site-specific indicators, monitoring the effects of forest management becomes more tractable and economically viable.
