ABSTRACT
Forest edges, boundaries, and other discontinuities in the forest landscape can present a direct challenge to forest structure and function (Saunders et al. 1991). In spite of this threat, certification protocols give little attention to the matrix landscape of a forest and the threats to its functions that may result from the management practices of adjoining properties. Land managers must look beyond using sustainability indicators within a particular forest and include the matrix landscape in their assessments.
