ABSTRACT

As noted in Chapter 3, the basic purpose of EM machines is to convert energy from electrical into mechanical form, or vice versa. We now turn our attention to practical devices designed for this purpose. There are literally hundreds of possibilities, so part of our problem is to decide just where to begin our study. Recall from Chapter 1 that such devices have two basic parts: the stator and rotor.1 A large and important subset of all EM devices are those which transfer energy between stator and rotor by induction processes, and are therefore logically called “induction machines.” We start our study by examining the details of induction machine construction.
