ABSTRACT

In 1975, there were fewer than 200,000 computers in the United States.1 By contrast, U.S. PC shipments

for 2004 are expected to number 56 million units; worldwide shipments are expected to number around

165 million units.2 A growing percentage of these computers are notebook units. In 1997, notebook PCs

(NPCs) were already 40% of total computer output in Japan.3 By 2007, notebooks are expected to con-

stitute 40% of worldwide shipments and 47% of U.S. shipments; in 2004, they are expected to be 30 and

34% of those shipments, respectively.4
