Each species has a direct life history pattern and each shows high host specificity for humans. Each matures and undergoes sexual reproduction in the intestinal tract. Information about their biology is given in Table 11.1 and their life histories in Figure 11.1. There is little evidence of significant reservoir hosts for STHs. There are reports of
A. lumbricoides
infections in chimpanzees, gibbons, monkeys, gorillas and orangutans (Habermann and Williams, 1957; Orihel, 1970). The future for STHs is likely to be more secure if tied to
Homo sapiens
rather than endangered primate hosts.
