Lactate has also been used as a potential ergogenic aid. Some have theorized that chronic ingestion of lactate could produce an adaptation that would enhance the body’s ability to buffer lactate accumulation during exercise, thereby enhancing performance during strenuous exercise. However, research has not supported this theory.282 Lactate as part of a sports beverage has also failed to enhance performance in comparison to carbohydrate when fed alone or in combination with carbohydrate.283
