The Overseas Highway from Miami to Key West offi cially opened on July 4, 1938. The two-lane highway with bridges so narrow that two trucks could barely pass each other followed the basic route of Flagler’s railroad, which was destroyed in the Hurricane of 1935. Few people realize that it was originally a toll road with a collector’s booth at the east end of Long Key Bridge.
