17.1 INTRODUCTION

In recent years, drugs used to treat anxiety disorders (anxiolytics) and sleep disorders (hypnotics) have received a great deal of attention from regulatory authorities, the legal profession, the media, and consequently the general public. This interest has been primarily directed at the benzodiazepine class of drugs and the physiological and psychological effects that may occur after stopping treatment. Anxiety and insomnia remain the two most common disorders of the central nervous system (CNS) encountered by primary care physicians.
