ABSTRACT

Over the past quarter century, manufacturing systems have been developed around the various cells — bacterial, yeast, animal, and insect — and whole animals. A system comprises the target cell, the host, and the means to isolate or create gene sequence, a means to insert the sequence in the host, and elaborate methods to remove and purify the target protein. Whereas a large number of canned commercial systems are available, making the entire process relatively straightforward, there remains a need to custom design a system.
