ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an approach for assessing regulatory restrictions, requirements and options based on or in-the-process regulatory initiatives. Under macroengineering, the action plan should include commitments to develop common procedures for environmental investigations and site characterization, data quality strategy, laboratory quality assurance, and other supporting documents. Radiation waste sites are additionally faced with identification and meeting considerations such as Dept. of Energy (DOE)/nuclear regulator commission (NRC) decontamination and decommissioning activities. Enhanced coordination on approach between Environmental Protection Agency/DOE/NRC has been achieved through the development of the Multi-Agency Radiation Survey and Site Investigation Manual (MARSSIM). The MARSSIM approach recognizes that each survey unit will have different physical characteristics that affect the scanning pattern and coverage selected for the survey. Typically, MARSSIM survey units are limited in size based on classification, exposure pathway, modeling assumptions, and site-specific conditions.
