ABSTRACT

In the last 25 years, the availability of enteral formulas for use in hospitalized patients has increased dramatically. In the late 1970s, when enteral nutrition support was in its infancy, approximately 16 enteral formulas were available for use (1). The present-day marketplace offers well over 100 enteral formulas, many of which can be considered for use in the critically ill patient. Selecting an enteral formula can be a challenging decision. Choosing an appropriate formula is often difficult, given the multiple formula variations that exist. The clinical state of the patient, including his or her current condition and any underlying disease state, is a primary determinant of formula selection. Moreover, other factors, such as energy and protein requirements and fluid status, are important considerations when choosing an appropriate formula.
