ABSTRACT

In Mexico, as elsewhere, it is difcult to point to a particular type of agricultural production system and say with condence that it is sustainable. The existing production systems generally referred to as organic, however, have many of the characteristics required for sustainable systems. Organic agriculture in Mexico has experienced a rapid growth in recent years, which indicates that farmers are actively converting conventional systems (and systems that mix conventional and traditional practices) into systems that are the closest approximations we have of sustainable systems.
