ABSTRACT

As always in engineering, we need to reduce the subject to quantifiable terms. This means that solvable equations need to be established. The relevant equations can be subdivided into three categories. In the first, we have the mechanical equations that express conservation of mass and the momentum equation, which is based on Newton’s second law. In the second category we have the first and second laws of thermodynamics. The first law expresses conservation of energy, while the second law is a constraint on any physically realizable process.
