ABSTRACT

The classical modifier means, e.g., that statistical mechanics, quantum mechanics, and critical point theory are not considered. In fact, in the early part of this chapter the theory is discussed as it existed, more or less, at the start of the 20th century. More advanced concepts, however, are introduced that are useful in later chapters. Since this is not a thermodynamic text, the presentation is selective and occasionally sketchy.
